What is a Center for Independent Living?

Centers for Independent Living (CILs) are typically non-residential, private, non-profit, consumer-controlled, community-based organizations providing services and advocacy by and for persons with all types of disabilities. Their goal is to assist individuals with disabilities to achieve their maximum potential within their families and communities.
Also, Centers for Independent Living serve as a strong advocacy voice on a wide range of national, state and local issues. They work to assure physical and programmatic access to housing, employment, transportation, communities, recreational facilities, and health and social services. These are just a few of the services offered. 51% of staff are persons with disabilities; 51% of Board of Directors are persons with disabilities; and provides four core services: Advocacy, Information and Referral, Independent Living Skills Training and Peer Counseling.

There are nearly 500 centers for Independent Living in the USA. Many are state supported. To find a particular Center in your state, please click on the link from the ILRU directory.  Learn More
