The first day of hurricane season starts Satruday June 1st and ends November 30th. The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP) is
encouraging everyone to be ready. Weather officials are predicting a season of 9 hurricanes and 18 unnamed storms so it’s imperative to get prepared now.
We urge everyone to take personal responsibility and have a game plan for themselves and their families; and also check on elderly and/or disabled neighbors that might need assistance in developing their plan.

New FM Radio Based Louisiana Emergency Notification Sytstem Available
Baton Rouge, LA (May 22, 2013) – Louisiana has completed the implementation of the ALERT FM and GSSNet systems across the state, improving the way the state delivers voice and text emergency notifications to the public, the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness announced today.
The public can access ALERT FM information by purchasing an ALERT FM receiver http://www.alertfm.com./ or using a free app that is available for both Apple and Android devices.
Centers for Independent Living (CILs) are typically non-residential, private, non-profit, consumer-controlled, community-based organizations providing services and advocacy by and for persons with all types of disabilities. Their goal is to assist individuals with disabilities to achieve their maximum potential within their families and communities.
Also, Centers for Independent Living serve as a strong advocacy voice on a wide range of national, state and local issues. They work to assure physical and programmatic access to housing, employment, transportation, communities, recreational facilities, and health and social services. These are just a few of the services offered. 51% of staff are persons with disabilities; 51% of Board of Directors are persons with disabilities; and provides four core services: Advocacy, Information and Referral, Independent Living Skills Training and Peer Counseling.
