The Advocacy program encourages consumers to become strong self-advocates by helping them to understand their rights and teaching them to be assertive.  RIL is active in systems advocacy issues that include housing, transportation, barrier removal and personal assistance services.  The Independent Living Specialist will assist the consumer to achieve these goals.

RIL provides two kinds of Advocacy:

    •       Consumer advocacy, which involves staff working with persons with disabilities to obtain necessary support services from other agencies in the community.
    •     Community advocacy, which involves staff, board members, and volunteers initiating activities to make changes in the community enabling all persons with disabilities to live more independently.
