The Advocacy program encourages consumers to become strong self-advocates
by helping them to understand their rights and teaching them to be
assertive.
RIL is active in systems advocacy issues that
include housing, transportation, barrier removal and personal assistance
services.
The Independent Living Specialist will assist the
consumer to achieve these goals.
RIL
provides two kinds of Advocacy:
- Consumer advocacy, which involves staff working with
persons with disabilities to obtain necessary support services from other
agencies in the community.
- Community advocacy, which involves staff, board
members, and volunteers initiating activities to make changes in the community
enabling all persons with disabilities to live more independently.

Process
for Enrollment:
- The Core Services Program Manager informs the Independent Living
Specialist to open a case.
- The Independent Living Specialist contacts the consumer after notice from
the Core Services Progam Manager to inform the consumer that services are being
offered.
- The Independent Living Specialist and consumer meet to coordinate
services and complete agency paperwork.
- Together, the Inpenpendent Living Specialist and consumer complete an
Independent Living plan and outline the consumer’s needs and supports.
- Once the goals are discussed,the Independent Living Specialist can begin
assisting the consumer
with achieving their desired goal(s).
